Historical Gurdwaras of Kiratpur Sahib

The town of Kiratpur Sahib was established in 1683 by Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji Mahraj. The land of Kiratpur Sahib was bought from Raja Tara Chand of Kehloor through Baba Gurditta Ji. The Var of being established was however given earlier when Guru Nanak Dev ji visited this city. Most of us usually only visit Patalpuri Sahib as it is along the main road leading to Anandpur Sahib but the whole actual city of Kiratpur Sahib lies on the other side of the Satluj river housing a number of important asthans.


This city is historically significant because it is where this events took place:

- Parkash and Gurgadhi of Guru Har Rai Ji and Guru Har Krishan Ji

- The Joti Jot of Guru Har Gobind ji, Gur Har Rai ji and Baba Gurditta Ji

- Guru Nanak Dev ji's visit and meeting with Pir Buddhan Shah

- Guru Gobind Singh ji alongside Sanggat came to get the holy Sees of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji from Bhai Jetha Ji. 


1. Gurdwara Shri Sheesh Mahal Sahib 

Gurdwara Sri Sheesh Mehal Sahib was the home of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji and their family. The Parkash of Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji and Sri Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji took place here.





2. Gurdwara Sri Damdama Sahib 

This asthan is within the Gurdwara Sri Sheesh Mehal Sahib compound. Guru Ji used to hold diwans here regularly.


3. Gurdwara Sri Harmandar Sahib & Nau Lakha Bagh

Guru Hargobind Ji Mahraj created a lovely herbal and flower garden called Nau Lakha Bagh at this site. Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji met with Dara Shikoh, the brother of Aurangzeb, at this Gurdwara and cured him of a poisonious illness inflicted by his brother. Guru Ji also had an animal sanctuary where they leave animals that they hunt. The famous sakhi of Guru Har Rai Ji's chola (robe getting stuck to a flower and breaking it is also said to have taken place in this gardens.











4. Gurdwara Sri Kot Sahib 

Situated in the compounds of Gurdwara Sheesh Mahal, this asthan marks the site where Sri Guru Har Rai Ji and Sri Guru Har Krishan Sahib ji was given Gurgadhi.






5. Gurdwara Sri Charan Kamal Sahib Kiratpur 

This asthan commemorates the spot where Peer Baba Budhan Shah met Sri Guru Nanak Sahib Ji when they visited this city. He offered Guru Ji some milk. Guru Nanak Sahib Ji said they would take the milk in their 6th roop which they later fulfilled during the time of Guru Hargobind Ji Mahraj.





6. Gurdwara Baba Gurditta Ji

This asthan marks the cremation site of Baba Gurditta Ji who left to Sachkand after resurrecting earlier on that day a cow which he had inadvertently killed while out hunting. This incident caused his father, Guru Hargobind Ji to be upset as he displayed a miracle. Baba Gurditta Ji overtaken by remorse for causing annoyance to his father, quietly quitted his earthly frame at the age of 24 at this place.





7. Gurdwara Sri Teer Sahib

Guru Hargobind Ji Mahraj used to shoot arrows from this place. From this place, Guru Ji revealed the location where they will leave to Sachkhand by shooting an arrow towards a place which is currently known as Gurdwara Patal Puri Sahib.







8. Peer Baba Budhan Shah Ji da Takeeya.

This asthan of Peer Budhan Shah was visited by Guru Nanak Dev Ji Mahraj and Baba Gurditta Ji. As Guru ji pormised to take milk from them in their 6th form, Guru Hargobind Ji Mahraj later sent Baba Gurditta Ji to ask for the milk they promised. It also houses Peer Budhan Shah

Ji's grave.






9. Gurdwara Sri Bibangarh Sahib 

This asthan marks the spot where the Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Mahraj and Sanggat came from Anandpur Sahib, to receive the Sees (sacred head) of his father, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. The Sees was received and placed on a biban to be carried for cremation to Anandpur Sahib (at Gurdwara Sri Sis Ganj Sahib Anandpur Sahib).





10. Gurdwara Patal Puri Sahib

This Gurdwara, on the banks of the Sutlej, is where Guru Hargobind Ji Mahraj and Guru Har Rai Mahraj were cremated. The ashes of Guru Harkrishan Ji was also brought from Delhi and immersed here. Ram Rai Ji’s ashes were brought here as well.



11. Gurdwara Manji Sahib (Gurdwara Bibi Veero Ji)

This house is believed to be the house of Bibi Veero Ji and several puratan artifacts are also preserved here.
