- not pronouncing the ਹ at the end of a shabad.
- merging words with similar letter ending one word and beginning another word - for example the ਰ in ਦਰਿ ਰਾਜਾਨੁ. We often cut out one letter and merge the two together.
- not pronouncing Adkh (ੱ ) when there is a need to be pronounced. Whenever a letter in a shabad has Adkh (ੱ ) , the letter needs to be emphasized on - in other words, you need to press that specific letter when you pronounce it. There is no naturally written Adkh in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, so where to include the Adkh is learnt in Samphardha when one does santhiya. The Adkh is important as you will notice in this post, the meaning of the shabad changes with the presence of the Adkh sometimes.
Here are some common mistakes that is done in each Paurhia of Japji Sahib. Commonly, almost every shabad in Japji Sahib has a probability to be mispronounced but we have included only some more common ones here. Ultimately, it is impossible for a person to read Japji Sahib without doing a proper Japji Sahib Santhiya from a teacher. Therefore, this post is not a santhiya replacement. A list of useful links are also given at the end of this post if you would like to listen along and learn the right pronunciations.
The name of the bani is Japji Sahib and should not be pronounced as Jabji Sahib.
ੴ - The correct pronunciation is ਇੱਕ ਓਅੰਕਾਰ. Separate the two words when reading. Do not pronounce it as ਇਕਮਕਾਰ, ਏਕਮਕਾਰ, or ਇਕਿਓਅੰਕਾਰ.
ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ - Sometimes we skip pronouncing the ਮੁ when reading fast.
ਨਿਰਭਉ - Do not mispronounce as ਨਿਰਭੋ
ਅਕਾਲ - Do not pronounce it as ਆਕਾਲ.
ਅਜੂਨੀ - Do not pronounce it as ਅਯੂਨੀ. Some also mispronounce ਅਜੂਨੀ as ਆਜੂਨੀ
ਸੈਭੰ - The right ucharan is ਸੈ-ਭੰ (ਭੰ is nasal sound) . Do not pronounce as ਸੈਬੰ or ਸੈਭੰਗ.
ਜਪੁ - Say it softly by not pressing the word and not as ਜੱਪੁ.
ਹੈ ਭੀ - Pronounce the ਭ properly and not as Happy.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਜੇ ਬੁਝੈ ਤ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥ - ਬੁੱਝੈ (pressed) means to understand something, while ਬੁਝੈ means to extinguish something. When there are accompanying words like ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ (desire), ਪਿਆਸ (thirst), ਅੱਗ (fire) which requires extinguishing, ਬੁਝੈ is pronounced softly without an Adkh, but when there are accompanying words like ਹੁਕਮ (order), ਨਾਮ (name), ਗਿਆਨ (knowledge) ਪ੍ਰਮੇਸਰ(God), then ਬੁਝੈ is pressed with an Adkh as ਬੁੱਝੈ.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਵਿਖਮੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ - ਵਿੱਦਿਆ is pronounced with an Adkh because ਵਿਦਿਆ means farewell, while ਵਿੱਦਿਆ means education.

ਆਖਹਿ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥ - Don't skip pronouncing the last ਹ of all the words.
ਮੁਹੌ ਕਿ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ - Pronounce the Kenaura (ੌ ) in ਮੁਹੌ properly.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ - Pronounce the Sihari properly in ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ [ਅੰ(without) + ਮ੍ਰਿਤ (death)]. The Sihari is pronounced with the Pairi Rara. It is often mispronounced as ਅੰਮ੍ਰਤ. Pronounce ਵੇਲਾ softly, if pressed as ਵੇੱਲਾ would mean jungle.
ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ॥੪॥ - Pronounce the ਣ in ਜਾਣੀਐ properly - many mispronounce it as ਜਾਨੀਐ.

ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ - Do not mispronounce ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ as ਨੀਰੰਜਨੁ.
ਗਾਵੀਐ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਭਾਉ ॥ - Pronounce the Dulava (ੈ) on ਗਾਵੀਐ ਸੁਣੀਐ properly - it is often mispronounced as Laav (ੇ). Pronounce the Kanaa on ਭਾਉ properly.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਦੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੇਦੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥ - Pronounce both of the Onkar on ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ properly. When pronouncing the Tippi of ਨਾਦੰ and ਵੇਦੰ, make sure you don't end up adding a ਗ at the end of the word.
ਜੇ ਹਉ ਜਾਣਾ ਆਖਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਥਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ - Don't merge the two ਨ in ਕਥਨੁ ਨ - pronounce both separately.
ਗੁਰਾ ਇਕ ਦੇਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥ - Do not put a bindi on ਗੁਰਾ by mispronouncing it as ਗੁਰਾਂ. Pronounce the ਹ of ਦੇਹਿ properly. ਬੁੱਝਾਈ pronounced with Adkh as it refers to understanding.
ਸਭਨਾ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸੋ ਮੈ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥ - Do not press the word ਦਾਤਾ as it refers to the "Giver" - if you press the word, it changes meaning to a type of "weapon". Pronounce ਸੋ ਮੈ separately , not as ਸੋਮੈ.

ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਾ ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਭਾਣੇ ਕਿ ਨਾਇ ਕਰੀ ॥ - ਨਾ੍ਵਾ and ਨਾ੍ਇ - press the words as they refer to action of bathing (hint is the word ਤੀਰਥਿ which means places of pilgrimage), if we pronounce them softly they refer to Naam.
ਜੇਤੀ ਸਿਰਠਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਵੇਖਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਲਈ ॥ - Don't merge the two ਲ in ਮਿਲੈ ਲਈ - pronounce both separately. Pronounce the ਈ in ਲਈ and not mispronounce it as ਲੀ.
ਮਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਤਨ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਮਾਣਿਕ ਜੇ ਇਕ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਿਖ ਸੁਣੀ ॥ - Pronounce the Sihari of ਣ in ਮਾਣਿਕ properly.

ਚੰਗਾ ਨਾਉ ਰਖਾਇ ਕੈ ਜਸੁ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਜਗਿ ਲੇਇ ॥ - Lengthen Laav (ੇ)on ਲੇ then briefly pronounce the ਇ .
ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਤ ਵਾਤ ਨ ਪੁਛੈ ਕੇ ॥ - ਆ-ਵਈ Pronounce the ਈ in ਆਵਈ and not mispronouce it as ਆਵੀ.
ਕੀਟਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੀਟੁ ਕਰਿ ਦੋਸੀ ਦੋਸੁ ਧਰੇ ॥ - Don't mispronounce the ਟ in ਕੀਟਾ and ਕੀਟੁ as ਤ.
ਤੇਹਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਜਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਣੁ ਕੋਇ ਕਰੇ ॥੭॥ - ਸੁ-ਝਈ Pronounce the ਈ in ਸੁਝਈ and not mispronounce it as ਸੁਝੀ.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਿਧ ਪੀਰ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਾਥ ॥ - Pronounce the Sihari (ਿ) on ਣ in ਸੁਣਿਐ - many mispronounce the ਣ with Bihari (ੀ) and mispronounce the ਣ as ਨ. Do not put a Bindi (ਂ ) on ਅ . When you pronounce ਸੁਣਿਐ, your mouth should naturally open wide when pronouncing ਐ. This applies to all the ਸੁਣਿਐ shabad that comes wherever.
ਸੁਣਿਐ ਦੀਪ ਲੋਅ ਪਾਤਾਲ ॥ - Lengthen Hora on ਲੋ then briefly pronounce the ਅ mukta.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਪਿਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥ - Pronounce ਜੇ ਕੋ separately , not as ਜੇਕੋ. Don't skip pronouncing the Onkar (ੁ) of ਛ in ਪਛੁਤਾਇ.
ਮੰਨੇ ਕਾ ਬਹਿ ਕਰਨਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ - Don't skip pronouncing the last ਹ of ਬਹਿ. Pronounce the Bihari in ਵੀਚਾਰੁ - don't mispronounce as ਵਿਚਾਰੁ.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਇ ॥੧੨॥ - The first ਮੰਨਿ has a Tippi (ੰ ) on it so it should be pressed when pronounced while the second ਮਨਿ is without a Tippi, therefore pronounced softly. This applies to all the other following three Paurhia of ਮੰਨੈ as well.

ਮੰਨੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਬੁਧਿ ॥ - Pronounce the Dulavan (ੈ) and Tippi (ੰ ) of ਮੰਨੈ properly.
ਮੰਨੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਨਾ ਖਾਇ ॥ - Don't mispronounce this as ਮੋਹਿ.
ਮੰਨੈ ਜਮ ਕੈ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ - Pronounce ਜਮ softly as it means messenger of death. If you press the word ਜਮ, it changes meaning to " freeze".

ਅਸੰਖ ਗਲ ਵਢ ਹਤਿਆ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥ - Pronounce ਗਲ softly as it reres to "neck". If you press the word, it changes meaning to "talk" (gal karni). ਵੱਢ and ਹੱਤਿਆ both pronounced with Adkh.
ਅਸੰਖ ਮਲੇਛ ਮਲੁ ਭਖਿ ਖਾਹਿ ॥ - Don't merge the two ਖ in ਭਖਿ ਖਾਹਿ - pronounce both separately.

ਅੰਤ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਬਿਲਲਾਹਿ ॥ - Pronounce both ਲ in ਬਿਲਲਾਹਿ.

ਕੇਤੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਖਾਹੀ ਖਾਹਿ ॥ - Don't mispronounce ਖਾਹੀ ਖਾਹਿ as ਖਾਈ ਖਾਇ.
ਕੇਤਿਆ ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ ਸਦ ਮਾਰ ॥ - Don't mispronounce ਕੇਤਿਆ as ਕੇਤੀਆ - pronounce the Sihari properly. Pronounce the Dulangkar (ੂ) of ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ properly.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਖਾਇਕੁ ਆਖਣਿ ਪਾਇ ॥ - Do not join the two words as ਜੇਕੋ - pronounce them separately.

ਆਖਹਿ ਵੇਦ ਪਾਠ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥ - ਆ-ਖਹਿ make sure you pronounce the ਹ.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਇੰਦ ਇਦਾਸਣਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਦਰਿ ਨਾਲੇ ॥ - Do not add in a Tippi and mispronounce ਇਦਾਸਣਿ as ਇੰਦਾਸਣਿ.
ਗਾਵਨਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਨਿ ਰਖੀਸਰ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਵੇਦਾ ਨਾਲੇ ॥ - Pronounce the Sihari on ਪੰਡਿਤ - do not mispronounce as ਪੰਡਤ.

ਹੋਰਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਮੈ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਨਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਿਆ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ - Pronounce ਸੋ ਮੈ separately , not as ਸੋਮੈ.

ਭੁਗਤਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਦਇਆ ਭੰਡਾਰਣਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਨਾਦ ॥ - Pronounce ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ softly as it means "heart". If you press the word ਘਟਿ it changes meaning to "lessen".
ਆਪਿ ਨਾਥੁ ਨਾਥੀ ਸਭ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਅਵਰਾ ਸਾਦ ॥ - Pronounce ਜਾ ਕੀ separately , not as ਜਾਕੀ. Do not mispronounce ਸਾਦ as ਸਾਧ because ਸਾਦ means tastes while ਸਾਧ means a holy person (Sadhu).
ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਦੁਇ ਕਾਰ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ਲੇਖੇ ਆਵਹਿ ਭਾਗ ॥ - Don't mispronounce ਦੁਇ as ਦੋਇ. Don't skip pronouncing the ਹ at the end of ਚਲਾਵਹਿ and ਆਵਹਿ.

ਏਤੁ ਰਾਹਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਵੜੀਆ ਚੜੀਐ ਹੋਇ ਇਕੀਸ ॥ - Pronounce the Sihari of ਹ in ਰਾਹਿ. ਇਕੀ-ਸ If you struggle pronouncing this - say ਇਕੀ (like the number 21) then followed by ਸ.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਕੇਤੀ ਛੁਟੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ - Don't mispronounce ਉਜਲੇ as ਊਜਲੇ.

If you have not taken Santhiya, we urge you to find a teacher and start your Santhiya journey so that you can read the Bani of you Guru properly. When one pronounce the shabads of Gurbani correctly, only then can they understand the arth (meaning) of the Shabads and then apply the teachings in their lives.
