Sikh Way of Life by Guru Amar Das Ji

Once, Guru Amar Das Ji was giving Darshan to a large number of Sanggat in their Darbar when Baba Budha Ji humbled asked " Guru Ji, would you please tell us how should a Sikh live according to Gurmat so that he gets liberated?

Guru Ji replied that a Sikh should:

1. Get up before the night's last pehar (Amrit Vela) & bathe. He should then sit in solitude to meditate - controlling mind, keeping consciousness focused in Parmatma & contemplate on Gurbani teachings. He shall do Simran until the Sun rises.

2. In the day - earn his honest living & do sewa of saints/Gursikhs.

3. Not associate himself in another's wealth, another's spouse, slander & speaking untruthfully.

4. Have empathy towards others' sufferings & be happy for others' happiness.

5. Not eat without hunger and sleep when not feeling sleepy. Whoever sleeps without feeling sleepy will reduce their age (we take more breaths when we sleep) and those who eat without feeling hungry will get variety of diseases and won't be able to meditate.

6. Remember Parmatma with every breath.

7. Always live in Parmatma's Hukam & never blame Him in times of sufferings.- to see everything done by Parmatma to be perfect.

8. Remove the pride of one's body/looks (to not spend hours beautifying self & satistifying bodily needs).

9. Not bring in more lust, anger, greed and to be satisfied/grateful for what is given by Parmatma.

10. Not show off good deeds done as by doing this the fruit of the good deeds will be reduced & it will be considered as a Pakhand.

11. Love and always do this three things - Naam (Parmatma's name), Daan (charity) and Ishnaan (bath at Amrit Vela).

12. Never listen to any Nindya (slander) of the Guru at any time - if one doesn't have the ability to sort out the slanderer, he should just leave the place.

13. Leave desires and jealousy - keep conciousness in Parmatma and not get indulged in worldly affairs all the time.

14. Accept that there is nothing greater than doing selfless Sewa and Simran of Parmatma. An enlightened Sikh shall never leave this two.

15. Always participate in Sanggat (congregation) of Gursikhs.

16. Recite Gurbani with love. When a person feels the love while reading & listening Gurbani, that is when one gets the indication that he shall attain liberation.
