Yatra Series 11: Family House of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji

Gurdwara Guru Ka Mehal in Anandpur Sahib was the residence of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Mahraj and their family. Guru Ji laid the foundation stone of the new town named Chak Nanaki (named after their mother) at this place. There are a few historical events that took place here especially the birth of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Mahraj’s three out four Sahibzaday.

During the construction of Anandpur Sahib, a passing Muslim Pir once asked Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Mahraj that you are a Guru guiding all Sikhs & your sanggat refers you as detached but why are you building a whole city with lotsa houses, shops etc that carries attachment? Guru Ji answered that in Kalyug, Ghrist ashram (household life) is the highest as it gives birth to all other ashrams as well as birthing saints. Ghrist ashram is also sustaining and feeding everyone via charity.  A Ghristi person needs house to stay at and to do sanggat sewa. Thus, Maharaj being a Ghristi was building the city of Anandpur Sahib for the welfare of the sanggat. They built houses and shops for sanggat to stay & sustain and at the same time do sanggat of Guru Ghar. Mahraj also advised that a true Ghristi is he who constantly does charity.
