Yatra Series 7: Historical Gurdwaras & Sites of Fatehgarh Sahib.

1. Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib
This gurdwara marks the site of where the two young sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji Mahraj were bricked alive, tortured and beheaded. The actual site is located in the Bhora Sahib which is underneath the Gurdwara.

2. Gurdwara Sri Bhora Sahib
This is where the Chottay Sahibzadey were bricked-up alive. It also has the kirpan hilts of the young Sahibzadey displayed in small cases.

3.Gurdwara Sri Rath Sahib
This marks the location where the Sahibzadey and Mata Gujri Ji were made to stop while Wazir Khan was notified that they had been captured. It was from here that they were taken to Thanda Burj later.

4. Gurdwara Sri Thanda Burj
The young Sahibzadey and Mata Gujri Ji were kept here while awaiting interrogation by Wazir Khan and his court. The fort was known as Thanda Burj as it was considered a cool place during the summer. However, it was a harsh punishment for Guru Ji’s little sons and elderly mother to be kept here in the extreme cold during winter. It was at this place that Mata Gujri left to Sachkand from the shaheedi of the Chottay Sahibzadey.

5. Gurdwara Sri Baba Moti Ram Mehra
Situated 500 Meters from Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, was where Baba Moti Ram was martyred by Wazir Khan. Baba Moti Ram was the person who with great sacrifice brought warm milk for Chottay Sahibzadey and Mata Gujri Ji when they were in Thanda Burj. When the Nawab found out, he ordered the arrest of Baba Moti Ram Mehra and his mother, wife and a little son. He did not conceal his act and boldly told the Nawab that it was his pious duty to serve the imprisoned children and their grandmother. Hence Baba Moti Ram Mehra, along with his family, was sentenced to death by being squeezed in a Kohlu (oil press).

6: Gurdwara Bibangarh Sahib marks the location of where the holy bodies of Chottay Sahibzadey and Mata Gujri Ji were kept for the night. The Mughals disposed the holy bodies in the dense forest behind Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, on bank of River Hansla. The forest contained many wild animals. It is said that a lion guarded the holy bodies until Todar Mal and others reclaimed them for proper cremation.

Gurdwara Joti Saroop Sahib is where the mortal remains of Mata Gujri Ji and Chottay Sahibzadey were cremated. The cremation was refused unless the land for the cremation was purchased by laying gold coins on it. Todar Mal Ji purchased this piece of land by offering the gold coins as demanded by laying them like a carpet in that whole area that he wants to use for the cremation.

Jahaz Haveli is the the 17th century residence of Todar Mal which is said to have been sold in order to purchase the land for the cremation of Sahibzaday and Mata Gujri Ji. The SGPC has been looking to eventually get ownership of this place and preserve/restore it.

There are three Sis Ganj Gurdwaras in Fatehgarh Sahib. The first (bottom right) Gurdwara Sri Shaheed Ganj Sahib which is in the compound of Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib is where Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Ji cremated 6000 Sikhs who had won martyrdom in the battle of Sirhind.

The second Sis Ganj gurdwara, Gurdwara Sri Sis Ganj Shaheedan Sahib commemorates the martyrdom of those Sikhs who were killed by the tyrannical Mughals after the time of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. The Mughals muslims put a bounty for every Sikh dead or alive. The price paid for the head of a Sikh was set at 80 rupees. It is believed that forty cartloads of heads of Shaheed Singhs, were cremated here.

The third is Gurdwara Sri Shaheed Bunga Sahib built in sacred memory of Jathedar Sukha Singh and many other Sikhs who became Shaheed in the Battle against Zain Khan in 1764 AD, the final Battle for Sirhind which resulted in victory for the Sikhs.

10. Gurdwara Patshahi Chevi. A site that that was visited by Guru Hargobind Ji Mahraj on their travels.
